 Iowa became the 29th State on December 28, 1846.
The name Iowa comes from Ioway, the French word for the Bah-kho-je Indian tribe that lived in the area.
Herbert Hoover, a West Branch native, was the 31st president of the United States and the first one born west of the Mississippi. The famous actor John Wayne was born in Winterset on May 26, 1907.
Major Industries are agriculture (corn, soybeans, hogs, pigs), food manufacturing and insurance.
